Psychotherapy Matters and Collaboration with Psychiatrist in Ontario
For some clients, therapy alone doesn't answer every question, especially when ADHD or Autism might be part of what's going on. A psychiatrist can offer things we can't: a formal diagnosis, medication guidance, or a second set of eyes on what's happening.
That's why select therapists at Willow Creek partner directly with Psychotherapy Matters Virtual Collaboration (PMVC). If your therapist is part of this network, it gets you in front of an Ontario psychiatrist without you having to chase down a referral on your own.
How It Works
This pathway is only available through therapists individually registered with Psychotherapy Matters, not everyone at Willow Creek is registered yet, so if this is something you're interested in, ask to be matched with a therapist who is, or check directly with your current therapist
We ask to work together for 2 to 3 sessions before a referral, this gives us the clinical picture needed to know a referral is the right next step, and gives the psychiatrist meaningful context to work from, rather than starting from scratch
Your therapist stays in the loop the whole way, they help start the referral and join the actual consultation
Your family doctor is part of the circle of care too, they receive and fax in the referral to get things started, and get the psychiatrist's report once the consultation is done
Typical wait is 6 to 8 weeks, compared to 6 to 18 months through the standard referral system
Everything happens over video, so there's no waiting room and no travel
You keep working with the same therapist before and after, and your family doctor typically takes over any ongoing prescribing once the psychiatrist's recommendations are in

What A Psychiatrist Consultation Can Offer
ADHD or autism assessment and diagnosis
A review of your current medications
Starting or adjusting a prescription
Notes sent back to your family doctor so everyone's on the same page
Autism & ADHD assessments (through PMVC's ADHD Matters / ASD Matters programs)
For clients specifically looking for an ADHD or Autism assessment, PMVC offers a more specialized pathway through its ADHD Matters and ASD Matters programs. These combine your psychiatrist, your family doctor, and your therapist into one coordinated process, built around how these traits actually show up day to day rather than a single yes/no label.
Available to clients 16 and older
Still requires a referral from your family doctor
After the psychiatrist's assessment, your therapist reviews the report with you in a dedicated feedback session
Comes with an additional program fee on top of standard PMVC costs (see Cost below)
Cost
The psychiatrist's time itself is OHIP-covered, no charge there. Your therapist's normal hourly rate applies for the consultation with your therapist and the psychiatrist, these run 1.5 to 2 hours, so it's a longer cost than a typical session, worth planning for.
An ADHD or Autism assessment through ADHD Matters/ASD Matters carries an additional program fee, $350+hst for either assessment alone, or roughly $450+hst for the combined assessment (confirm exact current pricing with us). Because this is an administrative program fee rather than a psychotherapy session fee, it's likely not covered by extended health insurance, we'd recommend checking with your provider directly if you're unsure.
Want To Explore It?
Ask your therapist if they're part of the PMVC network. If they're not, let us know and we can help match you with one who is. More on the program itself at psychotherapymatters.com.
